Hi, I am Uncle Griff. When I was younger I had many questions about being gay, and a lot of fears too. I was taking a lot of trash talk from other people (including my family) and wanted to talk to someone about it all, but didn't know whom to turn to for help. I thought I'd go crazy. At this time being a gay person was against the law, and if you were caught "practicing homosexuality", you would go to jail for up to two years ... then during that time you would be put in a Government Mental Hospital because homosexuality was on the list of mental illnessess. I never went to jail, but my parents did catch me with another boy my age, fooling around, and I was sent to that hospital. (I'll never forget my father's words to the doctor. "My son is showing signs of being a homosexual. Please fix him". I was 14 years old.) I was scared, frantic, and learned to hide very very well, especially with the drugs I was given at that hospital. These drugs did help me a bit - I was a victim of being continually "used" when I was 12 and 13 by three older boys who lived close by - but that's another story and truth - I don't want to go back there - and keep the drugs - I'm a survivor and now and a mentor for those who need to be heard.

Eventually, a couple of years later when I was 16, I met an older guy (he was well over twice my age) and he really listened to me, didn't make fun of my questions and fears, never took advantage of me, and helped me understand and to cope with what was going on in my life. Now that I am his age (almost anyway) I want to return the favor he gave me. I know circumstances have changed, to be gay is ok now, at least in most places - but I bet some fears remain the same.
